i actually babysat for a woman who had three young boys, was recently divorced, and had never had to support the four of them on her own before.  she had to resort to using food stamps to feed her three kids.

she isn’t using them anymore, but she still has to work more than one job WHILE going to classes in the evening to get her degree and become a sign language interpreter.  she is not a freeloader, she is not a deadbeat.  she works hard everyday of her life to give her kids the best possible future she can.  she loves those boys.  and there would be days where she had to have me spend the night with them while she was working the graveyard shift but couldn’t even pay me in the morning because she didn’t have a degree and couldn’t get a decent job, so all the money went to bills.

i’ve spent the night with her family.  i know how they function on a daily basis.  they weren’t living it up eating steak and lobster every night on foodstamps.  they were eating generic cereal for breakfast, campbell’s soup for lunch, and spaghetti for dinner. i am entirely sure that the image of that receipt is a fake.  your allowance for foodstamps is only renewed monthly, and you really have to budget well to make it stretch enough to feed a family for a whole month. many families barely make it that long even with the food stamps.  if someone were honestly stupid enough to buy that shit for just one night’s meal, they would be out of money in a few days and would be on their own until their stamps were renewed.  it’s not like when you line up to get stamps they just hand you a credit card with no debt limit - there’s only so much you can spend.  not to mention that there are only certain stores and certain brands that even take food stamps, so you don’t really have the capability of picking up expensive foods anyway.

i mean, if you really think about it, this is the GOVERNMENT we’re talking about here.  do you people honestly think that if they’re funding something they’re gonna let people get away with shit like that?  no.  they’re penny-pinchers with just about everything.  it just doesn’t work that way.  and i swear, if i see one more person getting all self-righteous about this image, which has been floating around for YEARS and is really nothing new, i will scream.  IT’S FAKE.  NOT POSSIBLE.  AND NOT PRACTICAL, EVEN IF IT WAS.  DEAL WITH IT.

edit:  also, in reference to one of the many subtitles, food stamps are only one type of welfare, which works on a voucher system.  they can only use it for food.  it’s not like you can go up to a crack dealer and pay him with food stamps.  at least in this case you know that the tax money you pay and are so worried about is actually going toward the thing it was intended it for - food.

Actually i worked as a grocery store clerk and people DO abuse the system juat like that. Food stamps work on ANY item that is a food, lobster and other expensive foods included.

Just because you witnessed a family using their foodstamps properly does not mean they all do. Trust me i have seen it with my own eyes.

but still, it’s like i said - if people had half a brain then they wouldn’t buy that because they would run out of money too quickly.  if anyone does do it then there really isn’t much need to get so angry over it because then pretty soon they’ll fuck themselves over anyway.

It still really sucks because here i am working my ass off for minimum wage and i cant afford to eat lobster ever unless someone else is paying for me.

well, yeah, it does suck.  and there are always people who abuse any system, no matter how well off they are.  but eventually they get their just desserts, so there really isn’t much point in so many people being so hateful and butthurt about it.  to me that’s what’s really more frustrating - not the people who abuse welfare, but all the people who won’t stop griping about it when there are so many more important political issues people need to address than “fucking poor people so lazy why don’t you get a job and stop being a drug addict with my tax dollars?!”  especially since they never fully understand most people’s lives who are in that situation.
